Arguably the most iconic of all PC shooter games in FPS History, Counter-Strike is a name nearly every PC gamer is familiar with.

Counter-Strike started as a Half-Life mod in 1999, and has had several significant releases that veteran players would recognize such as

  • CS: 1.3 (Pre-Steam),
  • CS: 1.6 (Introduced with Steam),
  • CS: Condition Zero,
  • CS: Source, and
  • the most current Counter-Strike Global Offensive.

There were even some spin-off titles made in Asia and Asia-Pacific regions such as “Counter-Strike Online.”

Boom Headshot!

Being a “twitch shooter” at its core, and one that paved the road for many other shooters to follow, having the most stable and lowest ping possible is critical to success. The game is incredibly lag-sensitive, and when you are in a clutch potential position, the smallest jitter in ping can determine if you land that last “one deag” or not.

What is Lag?

Lag is an expression used to describe impaired computer functionality often associated with network performance. There are three important factors to your connection: ping (latency), jitter, and packet loss

Ping (latency) is a measurement of the time it takes a packet (piece of data) to get from one device to another, such as from your PC to a game server, or vice-versa.

Jitter is the fluctuation of latency over time (standard deviation); high jitter gives you unpredictable performance and can really mess with your aim.

Packet Loss is the percentage of packets that don’t arrive at their destination within a certain amount of time. Some “lost” packets are really just slow, but so slow they get ignored by the game server. When packets are lost, your commands may be ignored. When packet loss is especially high, you risk of rubber banding or the possibility of being disconnected mid-game.

Tip: You can view detailed network statistics about your game by opening the built-in netgraph overlay in CS:GO. Open your game console and type: “net_graph 1” (0 is off) to toggle the netgraph overlay.

In Counter-Strike you want to achieve the lowest of all three for the most responsive and accurate gameplay. CS players all agree: When you lag, you lose!

Switch to Ethernet

Are you a Counter-Strike player with constant frustration? Do your perfectly precise shots refuse to register? Do you accuse every target you miss of being a hacker?

We have the solution for you: Get off WiFi!

WiFi was never intended for gaming and is strongly discouraged as there are many variables that can cause disruption, leading to packet loss and higher ping. You can read more about why WiFi is killing your gaming success here.

If hard-wiring an Ethernet cable isn’t possible (or practical), then your next best solution is a Powerline ethernet kit.

Tune your rig

When playing a competitive shooter like Counter-Strike, you want to have the smoothest running system possible! While this won’t help with network problems, a properly running computer is essential to gaming performance.

If your FPS (framerates per second) is below 30fps, you will struggle to keep up with other players running at 60fps or higher. Do what you can to increase your fps!

Here’s a checklist to achieve the best fps possible:

  • Make sure your computer meets Counter-Strike Global Offensive’s suggested system requirements
  • Keep Windows updated
  • Update your drivers
  • Fine-tune your in-game settings to find the “sweet spot” for performance vs. visuals Sacrificing the cosmetics in online games for a higher framerate is always worth it!

Install Haste

Haste is new network technology that can reduce lag, jitter and packet loss in Counter-Strike Global Offensive.

Haste relies on its specially designed, patent-pending network technology to give your game the best possible connection. Using multipathing to connect your PC to the Valve servers, Haste reduces packet loss, jitter, and ping.

Our custom network infrastructure is monitored in real-time meaning the more you use Haste, the more Haste will learn about your connection to ensure you have the best available routes. You can read more about Haste’s technology here.

These steps to reduce lag in Counter-Strike Global Offensive should make a positive impact in your game performance. There’s no better time to try Haste to see how it stabilizes your connection to the CS:GO servers, lowers your ping, and helps every headshot register.
